Common Problems, Possible Causes and Corresponding Solutions for Timing Belts
July 14, 2025
1. Abnormal Noise
Common causes: Misalignment of the transmission device, improper belt tension, worn pulleys or presence of debris.
Solutions: Correctly align the transmission device; adjust the belt tension according to the manufacturer's recommendations; replace worn pulleys and clean up debris.
2. Tension Loss
Common causes: Weak rigidity of the supporting structure, excessive pulley wear, excessive load or excessively high ambient temperature.
Solutions: Strengthen the supporting structure; replace pulley materials; redesign the transmission device to adapt to the load; control the temperature not to exceed 85℃.
3. Excessive One-sided Wear
Common causes: Misalignment of the transmission system, insufficient belt tension, rough flange edges or the belt touching obstacles.
Solutions: Realign the transmission system; adjust the tension to the recommended value; repair or replace the flange; remove obstacles.
4. Belt Breakage or Rupture
Common causes: Excessive impact load, too small pulley diameter, improper installation or storage, contact with chemicals.
Solutions: Redesign the transmission device to increase capacity; use pulleys with larger diameters; store and install in accordance with specifications; avoid contact with chemicals.
5. Tooth Wear or Cutting
Common causes: Mismatch between belt and pulley tooth profiles (e.g., HTD, GT), improper tension, misalignment of the transmission device, excessive load.
Solutions: Use matched belt/pulley combinations; adjust tension to the recommended value; correctly align the device; redesign to adapt to the load.
6. Belt Derailment
Common causes: Misalignment of the transmission device, bent shaft or damaged bearing.
Solutions: Correctly align the parallelism of pulleys; replace the bent shaft or damaged bearing.
